I was tasked to come up with an idea for a Final art piece for my final drawing class, this is the video game inspired project that I came up with.
The work was inspired from the original work The March of Progress, 1965 by Rudolph Zallinger that was published in the book Early Man, 1965, that depicted an ape slowly evolving into a human.

I decided to take the concept and apply it onto something that has evolved, not only visibly, but also in a single person’s lifetime. I wanted to represent a generation of technology and specifically the digital gaming revolution, so who better than Nintendo? Nintendo is a gaming company that has survived through a major chunk of gaming history and they have always been on the forefront of new ways to interact with games.

I started with a few concepts in Photoshop.
I found that in the first concept, the flow of the controller wires seemed to give them all a connected feel, but in the second concept the ground level lining of the controllers really reinforced the reference I was aiming for.
The March of Control , 2012 by Thomas Emann is a hand drawing that was first sketched with pencil on a foam board, then; detail, colour and shading was added with coloured pencils.
